Social Worker Employed

The Department of Social Development has funded a full time Social Worker for iKhaya LikaBaba.  This post has been filled and our new colleague started working at iKhaya on 2 January 2014.  Her primary responsibility will be to ensure that all the children’s legal and social issues are well managed.  She also assists with the staff training and Early Childhood Development Programme.

New Volunteers Settling In

Lea, Amina and Theresa have arrived from Germany, and within a week they were tackling the challenges and embracing the children and people from iKhaya with incredible passion, and throwing themselves into all that which was happening - including the driving which amazed and surprised us. Ty Heuser was at iKhaya visiting over this time and able to introduce them to the church, Youth, School, Community and all of iKhaya's vital links. Ty, we are all awaiting the next visit and are in agreement that it has to be at least 6 months long!!! Lea, Theresa and Amina - we are all loving having you here. Welcome to the family and new home for the next 9 months!

Peter and Kim and parents - friends of iKhaya and who founded the organisation Stichting Friends for Africa visited iKhaya for a few days and were delighted to see the developments. In the same breath we too were delighted to have them all join us for our church service. Needless to say their laps were filled with the iKhaya children who immediately felt at home with them. Thank you for the beautiful soccer jerseys!

3 New Children Welcomed at iKhaya

We have welcomed three new little children to the iKhaya Family. It has changed some dynamics in our youngest in the home who has realised it was time for his 'promotion' and he has taken a strong leadership role! During 'naptime' in the Nursery he has been spied climbing out of his crib and into the cot of a new little chap and investigating his eyelashes as he slept! As soon as he was spotted he quickly and nimbly retraced his steps and once back in his cot, looked up as if to say 'There! I am back! Happy?"

The Children Go Biking

-1040108I could not resist adding this set of pics of some of our children. This is one of their FAVOURITE activities. It takes so long for them all to painstakingly push their bikes up to the top of the hill and then one by one they lift their feet and FLY down the hill, eventually coming to a stand-still at the bottom with huge smiles and such elation. The volunteers and staff also enjoy this activity but have been taken out a couple of times at the bottom of the hill by one or two bikers and now either join in or choose their spectator spot more carefully!!!
